The Fearless Nature of An Artist
I interviewed Maestro Balam Soto on Friday June 20 for a feature article in INK Publications. I like conducting the interview portion which comes with writing these articles for INK. I meet with talented and insightful people and with each interview I learn something significant about art and design; and sometimes I am even able to gather profound notions which affect my own life and philosophies. One of the most exciting interviews I conducted was with the design team of Cummings & Good. Having listened to them talk about their work, my focus was centered around conceptualization and attention to detail. That interview, and their work, still inspires me to this day. Balam3 I interviewed Maestro Balam Soto on Friday June 20 for a feature article in INK Publications.

The discussion with Gilbert Boro taught me about process and provided new ways for me to think about and incorporate solid process in my own work.  During the interview with modern artist, Balam Soto, I learned about fearlessness.

Balam's story is really quite something. He resides in Hartford CT having moved here from Guatemala to be with the woman he loves and to pursue becoming a full time artist.  His work is beautiful, colorful and alive with a spirit that only a truly impassioned artist can bestow upon a canvas.  I hope you will pick up a copy of INK (I believe Balam's article will be published in the August 2008 issue) to read about how this gentle man came to the US speaking only ten words of English. How he produced his first painting as a boy in Guatemala by fashioning a paint brush made from a stick and his own hair.  Balam is now a successful artist who has received the title of Maestro from his native country of Guatemala and exhibits his work in galleries in Connecticut, New York and abroad.  He has even taught himself to program computers and create his own website and a blog.  He did all this in 12 short years.

The creative aspiration which compels an artist to pursue their art is an amazing gift (some may think it is a curse.)  But with fearlessness we can cross oceans, learn new languages, create beautiful marks on paper and pursue our dreams.  As Balam said to me "You can make art out of anything!"...  just fear not and you can obtain whatever magnificence your heart desires.

Seth Anderson at EO Art Lab - Not to be Missed
Last night's opening of Twist and Turn, art by Seth Anderson, was a lovely affair. The show runs through July 30, 2008 at EO Art Lab in Chester, CT. EO has built a solid reputation by presenting some of the best works in contemporary and abstract art in a geographic arena where impressionist landscapes and still lifes are the art du jour. What a breath of fresh air EO brings to those who like to contemplate a bit harder for their art. Seth Anderson's works are some of the very best to date. Theroosterandtwoeggs Last night's opening of Twist and Turn, art by Seth Anderson, was a lovely affair.

Son of abstract artist Sally Anderson, Seth's palette is sophisticated and elegant, his line is fine and economical and the application unique. Yet there is more... An underlying sense of humor in his compositions will certainly bring a smile to the viewers face. This is art I would buy.  And evidently I'm not the only one as the cash register was ringing and sales were being made throughout the evening.

The artist gave a 40 minute presentation on his background and application, explaining how his first artistic attempts were the result of doodles made on the pages of his school notebooks.  Those first doodles evolved into the looser present day works which recall the art of Klee and Miro.  Anderson uses a variety of media from acrylics, oils, markers, pens, and pastels and covers the final piece with beeswax.  Works range in size from 36x36" mounted on board to 10x10" on board or Plexiglas.  Framed and unframed.

I highly recommend a visit to EO Art Lab where the art is exceptional and the owner and gallery director are warm and welcoming.

EO Art Lab hours are: Tuesday - Wednesday 10-6. Thu-Sat 10-9. Sun noon-6

The Importance of Living in The Moment
My mother passed away on August 5, 2008. Prior to her death, I was commuting about an hour 3-5 times a week to be with her in the hospital and as we got closer to the end, my days were often conducted from her room. I was never very good at the notion of living in the moment. In fact, I could hardly understand the concept. But these last weeks I've not only been forced to learn to live in the moment, but I've grown to appreciate the importance of it. While my mom was sick, and after her death there was much to do and my single number one priority was to be with her and later to ensure that her last wishes were carried out.

Business deadlines came and went.  Projects and potential new clients were put on hold.  Emails and phone calls were not returned within the very same day.  And in fact, this is the first post I've written here at ArtLOOK since my mom left us.  Because the future was quite unknown, I was unable to make plans or commitments for the next hour let alone the next week.

Over the days, my thinking became increasingly focused.  Thoughts and decisions were made thoughtfully and judiciously.  Oddly I found myself very calm.  There was a great deal of sadness in those days but there was also much less "hurry up" stress and much less the feeling of hectic living.  Each task was singularly focused and I knew that what I was doing at any given time was "exactly what I needed to do."  There wasn't the pressure of thinking ahead to the 20 other tasks that required tending.  I KNEW those other tasks would get taken care of at the proper time.

My mom often said "Every cloud has a silver lining."  It is my hope, that in some way, the lessons I learned from her passing will enable me to live a better life.  A parent never stops teaching their child... right up and after they have left this world.
